MIAMI: An Amazon Prime Air cargo jet overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, crashed into vehicles and erupted in fire, killing at least five people and seriously injuring five others, officials said.
The aircraft, a Boeing 767-300, left the pavement after landing, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Video from the field showed a heavy column of smoke over the airport as crews moved in.
Florida officials confirmed the death toll Sunday evening. Bay News has not independently identified the victims. Amazon and the NTSB were expected to join the on-scene investigation.
Miami International is one of the busiest cargo hubs in the country. Sunday’s crash is the deadliest aviation accident in South Florida in years and immediately became the lead across the state’s newsrooms.
The FAA closed the affected runway while wreckage was cleared. Travelers reported delays through the Labor Day evening bank. Bay News will update this report as the NTSB speaks.
