JAKARTA: Eruptions at Anak Krakatau closed eight Indonesian airports and left more than 170,000 passengers stranded, the BBC reported Sunday, after ash was detected in airspace near the capital.
The volcano sits in the Sunda Strait, on the caldera of the 1883 eruption that made Krakatau a global word. Anak, “child”, has been building and collapsing for decades.
Aviation authorities divert around ash because it destroys jet engines. The passenger number will move as the plume does. Bay News will update if Jakarta’s main airport stays closed into Monday.
